  • 1960Creation of SNCCHe helped to form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
  • 1965Georgia State LegislatureElected to the Georgia House of Representatives but was barred from taking his seat. This decision was eventually overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 1968Vice President NominationFirst Black man to have his name entered into nomination for Vice President of the United States by a major party. He quickly declined as he was only 28 and not 35 as the Constitution requires.
